J. C. Comiso received his B.S. from the University of the Philippines, his M.S.
from Florida State University, and his Ph. D. from the University of California
at Los Angeles, all in physics, in 1962, 1966, and 1972, respectively. He was
a research associate at UCLA and at the University of Virginia, and a senior
member of the technical staff at Computer Sciences Corporation, before joining
the Goddard Space Flight Center as a physical scientist in 1979.
His research interest includes the utilization of satellite microwave and infrared data to study climate change, air-sea-ice interactions in the polar regions, and physical and biological processes in polynyas and marginal ice zones. He has been involved in three field programs in the Antarctic region, an aircraft overflight over a nuclear submarine in the Arctic, and radiative transfer modeling studies of snow and sea ice. He is a member of the NASA EOS/AMSR team and is a principal investigator for JERS1 SAR, and ERS2 SAR projects. Also, he is a recipient of a peer-award for best paper and several special service awards at GSFC and is co-recipient of a NASA Group Achievement Award. Comiso, J.C., and R.
