Dr. Donald J. Cavalieri

Photo of Dr. Donald J. Cavalieri Donald J. Cavalieri received a B.S. degree in physics from the City College of New York in 1960, an M.A. degree in physics from Queens College of New York in 1967, and the Ph.D. degree in meteorology and oceanography from New York University in 1974. He is a senior research scientist within the Oceans and Ice Branch of the Laboratory for Hydrospheric Processes at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. His research interests include sea ice algorithm development and validation for satellite microwave radiometers, air-sea-ice interactions associated with coastal polynyas in both the Arctic and Antarctic, and decadal sea ice variability. The current focus of his work centers on the development and validation of sea ice algorithms for the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR). Dr. Cavalieri is a principal investigator on both the EOS Aqua AMSR-E and the ADEOS II AMSR Instrument Science Teams. Most recently, he was chief scientist for Meltpond2000, an EOS Aqua AMSR-E aircraft campaign to validate the AMSR-E sea ice algorithms under summer melt conditions in the Arctic. Dr. Cavalieri also serves on the DMSP Special Sensor Microwave Imager Sounder (SSMIS) Calibration/Validation Team. The SSMIS, scheduled for launch in the fall of 2000, is the follow-on to the DMSP Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSMI) series of sensors. Previously, he led the development of the NASA Team sea ice algorithm for the Nimbus 7 Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer and later modified the algorithm for use with the DMSP SSMI. Following the launch of the first SSMI, Dr. Cavalieri led a NASA sponsored aircraft campaign to validate the modified NASA Team sea ice algorithm.
